The Tau Empire is less than 2000 years old, and is ever-expanding from its homeworld in the eastern fringe of the galaxy.  Although mere infants compared to the elder races, the Tau's highly advanced technology and weaponry  make them viable contenders for galactic dominance.

Tau society follows a strict caste system.  Each caste helps and supports every other caste while focusing on its own role within Tau culture.  Tau are born into their caste, and breeding outside one's own caste is strictly forbidden.  The four castes are:

Shas (Fire) Caste - The warriors and military

Fio (Earth) Caste - The builders, engineers, and artisans

Por (Water) Caste - The negotiators and politicians.

Kor (Air) Caste - The pilots and messengers.

The final caste is the enigmatic Ethereal caste.  The Ethereals (Aun) oversee all of the other castes, coordinating their efforts and orchestrating the advancement of the Greater Good.

All of Tau society exists for "Tau'va," or the Greater Good; a philosophy in which individuals lay aside their own desires and ambitions in order to elevate the race as a whole, a concept unheard of in the brutal Empire of Mankind.
