22 July 2206 - On the Wings of Angels

The Seraphim Squad have been completed.  I know, I know... I can't believe it either.  Check out the group shot below, or go right to their gallery HERE.

I still have an Exorcist to paint to get up to 1000 points, though...

27 June 2006 - Can it be?!?

An actual update - can you believe it?!?  Not much of one, granted, but still... after nearly five months, at least it's something!

Jump packs for the Seraphim.  And very soon, the bodies that connect these to the bases done oh so long ago...

6 February 2006 - Angels On High

The next unit I'm adding are the indispensable Seraphim.  Yet again, we got almost no GW loving for this unit when the re-release came about... one lousy Superior model was the extent of their range expansion.  With only two bolt pistol models in the range, the units could start to look rather bland.  I've converted all but two so far, to try and give at least a modicum of difference in the squad:

I've also modified regular Sisters backpacks and Swooping Hawk wings for more interesting and characterful jump packs:

And the six bases for the unit have been completed as well.  I couldn't just use my cast bases this time, as I wanted to elevate these flying girls without using those ridiculous tabs that come stuck to their feet.  Hopefully when fully assembled, they'll have the illusion of hovering over the terrain:

6 February 2006 - You Gotta Have Faith!

Or so sayeth George Michael...

Seven more Faith Tokens cast and painted up.  Until we get to really large points levels, with the 4 I already have, I shouldn't need to do any more of these:

24 January 2006 - Christmas Marine

I've finally gotten around to uploading the pictures I took of Pat's Christmas gift.  Awhile ago, I used some old, black-primer only marines to fill out a Templar list for a fight against his Tallarn Guard...  Pat was very excited to see this old, OLD Space Wolf-looking model, and tried to coerce my wife into stealing it for him.  I decided to paint it up in his Sons of Fenris color scheme for him for Christmas.  He's not based, since Pat STILL hasn't decided on a basing scheme... So simple black would have to suffice for now.  Click on the head to go see his pictures:

13 January 2006 - Terrain!

For Christmas, Pat presented me with a bunker he constructed from some online GW plans.  His theory was that I would enjoy some "Mindless Drybrushing" given all the meticulous and tidy painting I have to do day in and day out.  Boy, was he right!  So right, that it led to me busting out some old ruined cathedral walls that I had, and drybrushing those up as well.  Pat's been going terrain-happy over the holidays, and no doubt our next BatRep will feature lots more new scenery.

The Cathedral pieces are beautifully-detailed, solid resin pieces by ArmorCast.  They have all sorts of nifty Cathedral, tech cathedral, and other gothic scenery bits that are GREAT for quick 40K terrain, and at a fraction of Forge World prices.  Unfortunately, it seems that they are undergoing some "restructuring" right now.  I hope these pieces will still be available once they re-open!

I painted these pieces pretty much the same as the bases for the Sisters models.  After priming black, they received the same spray of Rust-Oleum "Anodized Bronze" as a base coat.  Then a coat of Krylon Matte Finish to give the (somewhat glossy) Bronze some tooth for subsequent layers to grab on to.  Rather than use up copious amounts of expensive model paints on these pieces, I used a selection of craft paints - Delta Ceramcoat Hippo Grey, then Apple Barrel Country Grey, Country Tan, and Dolphin Grey.  You get 2 full ounces of these paints for about a buck (as opposed to 0.4 oz for three bucks...), and they're readily available at craft stores, or the craft section of stores like WalMart.  Perfect and economical for mass drybrushing of terrain!  After those 4 drybrushed layers, I mixed up an ugly mix of chestnut, dark green, and black inks, and thinned the mess down to about 10 or 20 to 1 with water, so it was more of a tint than an ink.  This was dappled, stippled, smooshed, and slobbered on here and there and allowed to pool, drip, and generally be messy.  The bunker was given some painted-on streaks of dark green and black in as well, and all the blown-out chunks of the ruins got some black ink, too.  Some quick and pleasantly thematic terrain for our next game!

2 January 2006 - 750 BatRep

The Battle Report for our 750-Point game is now up in the BatRep section.  So... Go, click, read, enjoy!

25 December 2005 - 750 in the Bag

Battle Report won't be up until the New Year.  All I have to say is - I wonder if Neal at The War Store will let me exchange the dice I bought for some new ones?  Merry Christmas, all!

22 December 2005 - Gettin' our Game on

I've finally managed to finish off the 750-point level models.  New Year's Resolution?  To stick to what I started, and make those 250-point Deadlines again each month.  Football is winding down, we're settling into the new house, the Holidays will be over... Time to get back on track (because, frankly... I'll be out of excuses in January!).

So... we have some Sisters Repentia and their Mistress in the Elites Gallery, which I've just opened.  There's a new Sister toting a flamer over in the Troops Gallery, which has been redesigned to allow for changing squad formations.  And Palatine Melisandre makes her appearance on the HQ Gallery page.

Tomorrow we're having the 750-point battle.  What with Christmas and all, I wouldn't expect a battle report up before the first week in January - unless we REALLY have a crazy flash of efficiency.  But the Sisters and the Wolves are getting it on maņana!  Oh dear... that didn't sound right at all...

29 November, 2005 - And I mean it this time...

Well, we've moved in to our new home, and after 6 weeks I guess it's about time I get back to business on this Witch Hunters army, wouldn't you say?

We have a tentative match-up set for this coming weekend for the 750-Point level, which means our deadlines will be back on track for the end of each month - except for the 2 months we skipped (to be fair, "we" didn't skip them - it's all my fault).  Joining the Priest at this point level are a small group of naughty girls who got themselves in some sort of trouble with the Ecclesiarchy, and were forced to carry rather large swords while wearing lingerie and hoods, all bound up with chains like some Fetish Club Jacob Marley...

This leaves me with just three models to go - the Mistress for the above unit, a Palatine for my required HQ, and a Sister with a little Flame-Thrower.  'Course, I also have to paint up a new turret for my now useless Black Templars Whirlwind as well, but hey...

4 October, 2005 - Spit Happens

So here's the skinny: My folks came to town for a couple of weeks to visit.  They live in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania while I live in El Paso, Texas, so it's not like my wife and I can just pop over for Sunday Dinner...

That entailed endless days of housecleaning before their arrival, of course, as well as endless hours of watching the Game Show Network.

Also, we're buying a house.  Turns out, our closing is 10 days away at the time I write this.  Zoinks!  With the imminent  purchase and moving looming, my wife and I have been going through boxes that we hadn't unpacked for the two years we've lived here in our rental house, and have been having both Ebay and "Real World" garage sales, trips to Good Will, and all those other pre-moving hassles.

So I canned the deadline for September.  With Settlement on the 14th of this month - and nothing but the out-of-season holiday decorations packed - looks like I may have to beg out of October's deadline as well.  Or call October September, and call November October...

That's real life for you.

But! The fat guy with the unusually long Eviscerator pictured in the last entry in all his plastic glory has been painted, and is now resting comfortably in the Witch Hunters HQ Gallery (Virtually. In reality, he rests comfortably in my miniatures cabinet...).  Click the thumbnail below to go there:

16 September, 2005 - Big, Fat Clergyman

Now that we're up to 750 Points, I get to play around a bit with some more fun and interesting models, rather than just more rank and file Battle Sisters.  Which are great sculpts, don't get me wrong... But after 30 Plain Janes, I was ready for a little diversion.

Which brings me to this Priest I converted up over the past few days while I waited for Green Stuff to cure and glue to dry on REAL work.  I think ludicrously oversized weapons are great fun, don't you?  No WAY can he wield that...

10 September, 2005 - BatRep Up!

The 500-Point Battle Report is now up.  'Twas a good game, with some really unbelievable dice-rolling that just laughed at the laws of probability...

4 September, 2005 - Batch Two all wrapped up

Batch Two is now complete, and I'm all set for tomorrow's 500 Point battle.  I've reorganized last month's batch a bit, and added an entire new squad.

Here's the new Battle Sister Squad containing a Heavy Flamer and a Veteran Superior with Power Weapon:

Next month, one of those Bolter-Toters will be upgraded to a Flamer as well.

I've reconfigured my first squad of Sisters, changing the Veteran Superior from wielding a Storm Bolter to a Bolt Pistol/Chainsword:

...Which allowed me to move the Storm Bolter model over to a second Retributor squad.  I've split the 4 Heavy Bolters into two squads, backing them up with some plain bolter sisters, and both squads led by a Veteran Superior with Storm Bolter:

This 500-point list gives me 30 models and four Faith Points.  It doesn't allow for bells and whistles like Imagifiers or a second power weapon, but it does let me squeeze as many Sisters onto the table at 500 points as possible.  Next month these basic squads may get fleshed out with some more toys and bodies though.

Individual shots of the new models are posted in the Witch Hunters Gallery, under Troops and Heavy Support.

1 September, 2005 - Warm Bodies

The fifteen Sisters for my second batch are completed.  Just the Sisters.  Well, and their bases... This leaves just 15 backpacks and a Heavy Weapon to go for the 500 point level:

"What's This?!?" I hear you shout... "It's September the First... Surely he has missed the deadline, and we will be subjected to some horribly lopsided Battle Reports where the Sisters are outnumbered two-to-one by those wretched Space Wolves..."

Well, no... not exactly.  We've set up our 500 Point game for Monday - which, in the States, is a Holiday and most folks conveniently have off (Ironic then that it is called "Labor Day," neh?).  So I still have about 3 days to pump out those backpacks... and if there's time, even get those hand-painted fleurs de lis on the bolter casings.

24 August, 2005 - Bases for 500

Not much to report - The second batch of 15 bases are done, though:

"Whoopee," I hear you cry.

The 15 Sisters for batch 2 are all cleaned up and primed and ready for paint... But with only 7 days to go, I'm more than a little concerned.  I sure hope my wife doesn't have any plans for us this weekend...

18 August, 2005 - Slow Death!

Oh my GOD!  Has Schadle/Commander Y totally  just, like, forgotten about his whole BLOG thing, or what?

Well, no, not exactly.  BUT - nothing really new to update with.  YES, I'm behind.  YES, I have a ton of models to paint in the next 12 days.  NO, I haven't started yet.

Doomed, I tells ya.  DOOMED!

15 models to paint up for our deadline of the 30th.  I've gotten as far as priming the 15 bases, and removing the tabs from the Sisters' feet.  Think I'm gonna make it?  I sure don't... Undoubtedly, a midnight-madness marathon will ensue on the 30th...

Eeep!

5 August, 2005 - Updated Battle Reports, Mistakes

Patrick was able to quickly re-set his Power Point slides to represent the correct number of casualties, so Game 1 now has nifty battlefield diagrams like Game 2.  Also, after a bit of discussion we were able to clarify my notes for the last two turns of that game, so now it is more less exactly what may or may not have actually happened on Sunday.

We also noticed a small mistake in Game 2.  Pat was allocating Wounds to his Wolf Guard in order to get a save; unfortunately, due to the 4th Edition Mixed Armor rules, he had to take casualties on the majority Save in the group, which would have been the Scouts, who wouldn't have gotten a Save against the Heavy Bolters.  Still, it was in Game 2, which I won... and would have only counted for another two casualties or so.  No biggie, but we won't forget next time!  Imagine how my Templar Terminators felt after going through a whole game against Guard, thinking that Battle Cannons were AP 2 and not, in fact 3!  We'll get these rules down by the time we get to 1750 points or so, I just know it.

The emails have started coming in regarding my next block of 250 points, and the ideas and opinions are widely variegated!  I like many of the ideas, and plan to fool around a bit with Army Builder tonight, to see what my best option may be.  So if you have some cunningly deceitful advice to pass on, keep 'em coming - I appreciate it!

Whatever happened to the Frateris Militia?  A nice big block of 20 would slow those Scouts down some...

4 August, 2005 - Battle Reports, Rules, and Background, Oh My!

Had two games of 40K on Sunday, the day of the deadline.  Battle Reports are now up in the aptly named "Battle Reports" section.  Game 2 includes include some nifty Maps designed on Power Point by my opponent, Pat Cooley.  Battle 1 will get the same treatment shortly... a few icons need to be "adjusted" first.  They're also chock full of photos that Pat snapped during the games while I left voice memos on the cell phone as to what had just occurred that turn.  While not exactly White Dwarf quality, they'll give you a good idea of what went down on Sunday.

Patrick has also supplied a bit of background for his breed of Space Wolves, the Sons of Fenris.  Also, I've added the rules we came up with for our 250 point-a-month league.  Both of these can be found in the "Background" section, which now includes links to the separate sections.

Now I'm left contemplating my next block of 250 points.  I had the whole army mapped out up through 2500 points... but the more I think about what I had planned, the less I like it!  Any Sisters players or opponents out there who want to offer some advice as to what you think I ought to include next, please drop me a line with your thoughts.  Another squad of 10 Sisters?  Seraphim?  An Immolator for the Retributors?  An Inquisitor and henchmen?  Inquisitorial Storm Troopers?  So many choices...

I'm off to Phoenix for the weekend, so I won't be getting any new Sisters done until after I return on Tuesday.

31 July, 2005 - Finished on Time!

Finished up the last five models just in time yesterday, squeezing in the final details just before we left to go see a friend's Jazz Combo's first gig.  They were great - and I was able to enjoy the outing even more so, knowing my deadline had been met.  Well, sort of...

I still had to glue them to their bases and varnish the lot, so got to bed around 2:30 AM.  Took some snaps this morning, and head out in an hour or so to have our first clash of the new armies!

Individual shots are up in the gallery as well, as these lovely ladies open up the Heavy Support section.

Also painted up the four Faith Tokens I cast up, and heavily varnished them for the brutal use they will no doubt endure.  Of course, I'll only need the one today, but I should be set for the next couple months before I need to cast more:

For today's 250 points, those lovely Storm Bolters the Superiors have are "Counting As" normal Bolters.  So we have a squad of 10 Battle Sisters with 2 Storm Bolters, and a squad of 5 Retributors with 4 Heavy Bolters and a Veteran Sister Superior armed with a Boltgun, which comes to 249 points, and gives me one Faith Point.  I'll be facing Blood Claws and Scouts, so hopefully all that shooty goodness can whittle those youngblood Puppies down before the arrival of the old men that will wander in from reserves...

Oh, and a special Raspberry goes out to a Mr. Dave Key, who has been emailing me to tell me that I wouldn't get done in time!  So, Dave:  "Thbbbbbt!"

27 July, 2005 - Photos and Faith Tokens

I've added the first squad of Sisters to the Witch Hunters Gallery, along with individual front-and-back shots of each Sister, officially opening the "Troops" section.  I also re-shot the original 5 Sisters with my new, more favorable camera settings:

Compared to the crummy shot from the 24th, I think this is a big improvement.  If you look closely, you'll notice a few differences between the two batches of 5; I wasn't happy with the "blued" look of highlighting the Bolters with Hawk Turquoise, so the second batch's weapon casings use the same highlights as the armor, which I find much less distracting.  Also, I took the highlights on all the brown leather areas up another notch as after the varnish, it just wasn't "popping" enough.  Perhaps if I'm ever ahead of schedule and finish an installment of Witch Hunters before the deadline, I'll be able to come back to those first five and redo the casings and leather to match.

Using one of the door icons from the Immolator sprue, and making it double-thick with some plastic card, I've made a mold and begun casting up these Fleur de Lys symbols to use as Faith Tokens.  I just know that I'll forget about Faith Points, and how many I have, how many I've used... or even to attempt Acts of Faith at all!  Hopefully the use of these tokens right there on the table in front of me will serve as a useful reminder.  A quick Gold drybrush over some black primer, and they'll be ready to go:

26 July, 2005 - First Squad Ready for Deployment!

Finished up the second half of the first squad!  Tweaked about with my camera a bit, and got much better pictures this time around.  Here's some shots of the second batch of five, followed by the full squad!  I'm very excited to have knocked this much out so far - It officially marks the furthest I've gotten at any time I've tried to start a Sisters army (The first attempt, when the Sisters of Battle miniatures first came out, yielded one single model.  The next time, I got up to five...)!

This leaves me with just 5 models to go by Sunday.  Of course, I haven't even started work on them yet... Saturday, it seems, is going to be a late night!

24 July, 2005 - First Five Sisters

The first five Sisters are done, varnished, and photographed.  I'm not too happy with my photography so far... I'll have to adjust some settings on my camera to account for my new light diffusion photo box thingee I built.  Anyhoo - here they are:

The second batch of five (the ones who complete this first squad) are about half done, and I expect to get close to finishing them by the end of the day.  One week to go on the first 250-point batch... I'm starting to bite my nails a bit.  I can't not get them done... we agreed that whatever isn't painted in time doesn't get to take part in the battles.  In such a small game, that would be even more significant!

21 July, 2005 - Background Posted

I've posted up a brief background story introducing the Order of the Widowed Choir.  You can read it by clinking on the "Background" link just above.  OK, fine... or you can just click HERE.

Sisters are coming along... the first five are nearly complete and I've done a couple runs of bases with the new Por-A-Kast 2... It's great!  Much longer working time and no air bubbles this time.  Still starts to get sticky in a minute or so... but that's 3 times as long as I had!  Ought to be some sort of pics of Sisters by the end of the weekend.

16 July 2005 - 10 Backpacks done

Now that the bases were all sorted out, and would henceforth take much less time each month, I actually got to work on the models themselves.  I've cleaned up the squad of 10 and finished up their backpacks.  I used a tiny drop of superglue to mount them in strips of 5 to plastic strip "handles," which made the painting a bit easier.  The sisters themselves have been attached to plastic soda bottle screw-tops with the pins in their feet that will attach them to the bases later on.

In the photo, you get a microcosm of the final scheme of black and bone.  The black is simply the primer black (Krylon Ultra-Flat Black), highlighted with Vallejo Model Color 168 Black Grey, VMC 166 Dark Grey, and VMC 162 Basalt Grey.  The Matte Varnish does a good job of dulling down the highlights, so the black grey becomes very dark and subtle indeed.  A nod to Richard for his cunning recipe for the bone, which I tweaked a bit... VMC 150 SS Camo Black Brown, VMC 113 Khaki Grey, VMC 124 Iraqi Sand, and Bleached Bone.

I also received my order from Dick Blick art supplies, including some "Por-A-Kast Mark 2," which is a casting resin that promises a 3-minute working time.  If I work on, say, 6 bases at a time instead of the whole tray of 12, I should be able to paint in the details, mix more gently, and avoid the whole air bubble fiasco.  I'm excited to try it out, but at this point need to focus my efforts on getting 15 of the ladies done in 2 weeks!  I have begun the first assembly line of 5 bolter sisters, completing the faces, hair, and all the cloth parts (using the above bone recipe).  With only two weeks left, and just starting the sisters themselves, I'm getting nervous about meeting the deadline of the 31st!

I've sent the pictures of the old teal-colored Sisters and the "bowcaster"-wielding Inquisitor over to the Miscellaneous Sci-Fi Gallery to make room for this army in the Witch Hunters Gallery.  Right now it just has place holders, but it will fill up each month as I (hopefully!) complete my 250-point blocks of models.

My background fluff for this Minor Order of Sisters has been written up, but needs some editing, feedback, and tweaking before it gets posted up.  The Order of the Widowed Choir is on its way!

13 July 2005 - 10 Painted Bases

Through the cunning use of fine sand and white glue, I was able to take the 10 best bases and mask the air bubbles for the most part.  Having gone to the Hell that is my closest Wal-Mart (shouldn't it be less crowded than, say, a National Football League Stadium, on a week day at 2 PM, when everyone ought to be at work?) I found some very cool spray paint - Rust-oleum's "Anodized Bronze," a dark brown, non-metallic paint that allowed me to put down a base coat in seconds.  It dries much slower than most Krylon sprays, unfortunately, so I had to wait overnight for them to dry.  It's also a bit too glossy to accept drybrushing really well, so on the next set I think I will hit them with some Testor's DullCote or Krylon Matte Varnish before painting, to give it a bit more tooth.  Still, a bit of planning ahead, and getting the bases primed a day before I intend to paint them is still going to save a ton of time over brush base-coating.

Some quick drybrushing of Codex Grey and Bleached bone, using a soft makeup brush (I believe it is a "Blush Brush..."), followed by some extra Bleached Bone drybrushing on the little piles of sand, and they were almost done.  Brass shell casings, some bone and black here and there... the first group of ten bases took about one hour.  The little Brettonian shield with the Fleur de Lis on it is a preview of my intended black and bone scheme for the sisters themselves.

10 July 2005 - The first Base Castings

The Resin that I purchased to cast the bases was Alumilite's "Low Viscosity Super Light Casting Plastic," as that was all that was available for immediate purchase in El Paso, and came in the "Starter Kit" that I bought.  As it turns out, it has a VERY short working time - about 30 seconds.  I tried to follow my English Tutor's instructions - paint the resin into the details of the mold, then slowly pour the gently mixed resin to fill them - however, after painting in 2 bases, my brush met with a "clunk" as I dipped it in the plastic cup full of resin... which had hardened already into a 4 ounce lump of hard plastic!  Drat!

Mixing up a second batch of resin, I forwent the painting in, stirred quickly, and poured, using a bit of square plastic tubing to scrape the top and make them even.  While this worked fairly well, I had some areas of this first cast that did not... erm... "receive" any resin, and had several air bubbles right on the detail.  This crap resin gave me about 30 seconds of work time and fully cured in 3 minutes or so... not much time to vibrate out the air, not paint resin into the detail.  The second run was even worse, as I mixed the resin a bit too vigorously, forcing too much air into the mix, for even more bubblage!  In the pic you can make out the air bubbles and can clearly see that the "candle" base was a bit of a disaster.

Consulting my casting guru, he suggested a bit of wire inserted into the depths of the candle mold, jiggling it around a bit to break any surface tension, allowing the resin to creep into the flames.  I'll have to try that - once I find a resin that cures a wee bit slower!

8 July 2005 - Making the Base Molds

For the casting of the bases, I first had to construct some Mold Boxes, and make sure that the bases were sealed to the bottom.  Click the thumbnails for larger images.     This first box would contain the two bases that were significantly taller than the rest, economically saving me some silicone, while the second box could be much shorter and still cover the other 12.  Also, when pouring runs of bases, I would need more of the flat ones and less of these taller ones, as they will tend to "stand out."  The boxes are made from plastic card, and sealed with some white glue so no silicone would leak out the sides.   I also made sure to seal the bottoms of the bases with some white glue to the "floor" of the mold boxes, to avoid seepage from underneath.  The bases themselves were given a coat of "Scenic Cement," basically just watery white glue, to make sure no silicone would flow underneath the floor tiles or shell casings, etc.

After following Richard's (my "casting tutor") safety instructions, admonishments, and warnings, I mixed up the silicone and first painted some liquid silicone over each base, to ensure there were no air bubbles right next to the details, and then carefully poured the liquid rubber into the mold boxes from one corner, allowing it to flow around and over the bases.  Once covered, I transferred the trays to the top of my clothes dryer, set it for an hour, and let them sit - where the constant yet modest vibrations would help any trapped air rise to the top and avoid air bubbles in the mold.  After several hours, the silicone vulcanized, I broke off some walls from the mold box, and retrieved my beautiful new molds:

The third pic shows the relative thickness of the two molds... At the cost of silicone, making that huge tray the thickness needed for the two taller bases would have been insane!  With the bases constructed and molded up, now I could just run off castings as needed, rather than spending the hours and hours it took to hand-make those bases in the first place.  Now to let the molds sit and cure completely for a day or two...

1 July 2005 - The Escalation League Begins!

It's been about 4 years or so since I've been able to play Warhammer 40,000 with any sort of regularity.  While I have been happily collecting, modeling and painting all sorts of miniatures during this time, the disappearance of the only store in El Paso that had in-store gaming has left me without the actual gaming part of this gaming hobby.

Luckily, I was contacted a few months ago by a soldier moving to El Paso's Fort Bliss, asking about gaming prospects here.  While the news I had to report was not good, there were at least two of us now to enjoy a few games of 40K on the weekends.  His Tallarn Guard have faced of against my Black Templars a few times now, and it has been great to get back into the actual playing of the game.

While the Templars are the only standing army I have of over 500 points, and the Tallarn are his only option, we decided to embark upon an Escalation League (albeit only a two-person one!) to begin collecting and painting new armies.  He has decided upon the Space Wolves, while I have chosen an old passion of mine, the Sisters of Battle - who now fall under the auspices of the Inquisition, and the Witch Hunters.  This would be fairly inexpensive for me, as I have been collecting the wonderful Sisters range of miniatures since their inception, so had nearly everything I needed, barring a few new bells and whistles that were released with the Witch Hunters Codex.

As busy family men, we decided upon 250-point blocks to grow our forces, with the end of each month marking our deadlines for each increment.  Our first block of 250 is due at the end of July, for which we decided upon no models with more than 1 wound, no vehicles, and one compulsory Troops choice.

I've worked out my army lists already in 250-point blocks, and organised my piles of pewter.  For the first batch, I decided upon a squad of 10 Sisters of Battle containing two Sisters with Storm Bolters and a Superior to lead it, along with a Retributor Squad of five Sisters, four armed with Heavy Bolters, also led by a Superior.  I wanted to pump out as much firepower as I could in these small games, and those 12 Strength 5 dice at the Sisters' respectable BS of 4 would be just the thing.  15 models in a month?  Surely no problem, even trying to squeeze in the modeling and painting after a full day of Contract work of modelling and painting...

Thanks in part to a good friend named Richard in Poole, England, and his marvelous resin-cast bases, I had a very strong image in my mind of the basing style for the army - my Sisters would stride into battle mounted on bases that represented some sort of ruined Ecclesiarchy Cathedral, festooned with Sororitas iconography, chipped flagstones, purity seals and the like.  Rather than try and build all these bases over and over again, I decided to construct just 14 different bases and cast them up over and over again, which would definitely speed up the army-building process once I got the hang of this whole "casting" thing.  Click on the thumbnails to view the masters I built out of plasticard, plastic sisters bits, plastic rod, sand and the like:
